7:00 AM Start Survey. Foggy morning!
8:14 AM Tugboat pushing barge. Too foggy to tell name of barge or port. / upriver
9:06 AM Tugboat: Miki Miki (Portland, OR) / downriver
Pulling a barge of small cut lumber at a long distance. Curious why tug is pulling barge with such a long measure of chain. Is it necessary for extra heavy loads? Or a different reason? Don't know.
9:52 AM Rainbow Wing (Panama) / upriver
A Honda car carrier - the picture doesn't get it across too well, but these boats are huge!
11:43 AM Harbor seal surfaces about half way across river, in way of oncoming ship. Appears to look at ship, then around, then submerges again.
11:45 AM Harbor seal, apparently the same individual based on coloration of the head, surfaces quite close to shore in front of spotting location. Startles, thrashes, and dives at the sound of the foghorn.
11:50 AM TPC Timaru (Majuro) / upriver
The TPC Timaru sounded it's foghorn about when I could first see it. It continued the regular blasts as it worked it's way past me up the river. The fog lifted a little by the time it had made it's way all the way past me, and after the fifth or sixth blast it stopped sounding it.
1:40 PM Harbor seal surfaces downstream of spotting location, then submerges it's head again.
2:05 PM Terrapin Island (unknown port) / upriver
While I have only seen this boat once, my co-seal watcher who is stationed 6 miles upriver of me, says that it spend the rest of the day working a ways farther upriver from her. It stays in sight almost all the time, and works its way over and over what to her looks like about a mile stretch of river. She saw it again on Saturday, doing the same thing. What it's doing, and why it's spending all it's time on that stretch of river, we don't know.
*UPDATE: It appears we've solved the mystery. It's a dredger, and it looks to be working on a section of the Columbia. I wonder if it will work it's way all the way down to where I am, or if it's just doing that section?
4:30 PM Andromeda (Majuro) / downriver
4:45 PM Harbor seal surfaces and submerges in front of spotting location.
4:49 PM Harbor seal's body surfaces, head still submerged, before flipping downwards under the surface again.
5:06 PM Leo Forest (Panama) / downriver
Carrying a large load of unmilled trees.
5:20 PM Harbor seal surfaced upstream of spotting location, swam at surface upstream for about thirty seconds before diving under
5:24 PM Surfaced again farther upstream, then dove.
6:13 PM Morning Melody (Panama) / downriver
The Morning Melody heads off into the evening
6:50 PM End Survey.
