10:45 AM Start Survey. Late one this morning, as not needed earlier, so no sunrise today. Weather is balmy, wind low, no rain, no blinding sunshine - absolutely perfect. Have binocs out, settled comfortably, well content for a good long survey. No fish jumping, surprising, but then most days the real activity is earlier in the morning.
12:54 PM Tug: Lucy Franco pushing the barge Investigator of Harley Marine Services Inc. / downriver
12:58 PM Tidewater tug pushing the barge barge Big Bin filled with wood chips. / upriver
1:10 PM Giewont (Nassau) / downriver
1:50 PM Great blue heron flew in squawking to upstream of me.
2:08 PM Long row of cormorants perched alternately with wings outstretched or rigidly upright on an old log fetched up on the pilings. Precisely twenty of of them lined up at near perfect intervals, rather reminding me of a black clothed regiment up for inspection. The afternoon remains quiet otherwise. Even the river is calm, but for the periodic wake trailing behind small watercraft, lapping the shore.
2:22 PM Down aways from the cormorant's perch a taller post juts up, and on top of it is a great blue heron. I've rarely seen them perch on something so open and tall above the line of the water before, but it shows no apparent intention of abandoning the location.
2:35 PM Bald eagle swoops over the river, then made off eastward.
3:17 PM A shift of wind and drop of temperature. Small ripples in the water as the breeze picks up, riding in from the ocean., carrying a tang of chill.
3:32 PM Tug: Ernest Campbell (unknown) / upstream
3:34 PM Tug: Hallefoss (unknown) / downstream
5:36 PM Two hooded merganzers diving close to shore. They are quick and efficient with their dives, disappearing with hardly a ripple. Their red crests at the back of their head giving them a perpetual appearance of braving a heady wind.
6:04 PM Warm light finally fading from the sand. Shadows lie cool and blue.
6:10 PM Harbor seal swimming downstream.
6:15 PM A great blue heron winging out across the trees, heading far inland.
6:17 PM Ocean Harmony (Singapore) / downstream.
Carries a load of trees.
6:17 PM Harbor seal surfaced downstream.
6:27 PM Harbor seal surfaced, swam turning at surface before submerging again.
6:30 PM End Survey
