10/8/2011 Saturday

7:00 AM Start Survey.

7:44 AM Harbor seal surfaced directly in front of spotting location.

8:15 AM Two bald eagles are harrying a juvenile seagull. They're diving and swooping, claws outstretched, trying to get at the seagull. I wonder what it did to get them so irate. The younger, more agile gull is pulling some impressive stunts, cartwheeling in the air to get away from the grasping claws. Eventually, the bald eagles gave up. One flew to some pilings downriver from me, the other flapped slowly eastward until lost from sight.

9:57 AM Harbor seal surfaced, resubmerged downstream.

10:00 AM Harbor seal surfaced just to left of spotting location, submerged again.

10:41 AM Hanjin Washington (Panama) / upriver
The Hanjin sounded it's horn in 5 blasts, then repeated it, as it was crossing my field of view and out of sight upriver. 5 blasts means danger... I wonder what was in it's way? The issue must have been out of sight up the river.

11:03 AM Florida Voyager (San Francisco) / upstream
Whoops! Didn't get a picture of this one... but it's been by before.

12:01 PM Tug: Western Star (Portland) / u-turn
This tug, without a load, came just into view, then pulled a quick u-turn and headed back upriver. Wonder what it forgot?

12:37 PM A Tidewater Barge with a load of sawdust. Didn't manage to get name or port. / upriver
These barges are, I'm almost 100% positive, delivering raw materials for the Wauna Paper Mill that is located upriver of me.

12:50 PM Harbor seal surfaces slightly downstream, submerges.

1:10 PM Harbor seal surfaces directly in front of spotting location, submerges.

1:13 PM GH Fortune (Hong Kong) / downriver
We saw this ship go upriver empty on Wednesday night, as we were leaving after the survey was over. Now it's well low on the water, meaning it's got a full load of something!

1:30 PM A fancy fancy yacht. Hard to read the name, as it was in loopy gold lettering. The Lady Ms? I think? Couldn't see the port. / downstream

1:35 PM Harbor seal surfaces, submerges to left of spotting location.

1:49 PM Harbor seal surfaces, submerges in same spot as last sighted.

2:32 PM Harbor seal surfaces & submerges downstream of spotting location.

2:46 PM Harbor seal surfaces directly in front of spotting location, thrashing somewhat. It has a large (8-10 inch) fish in it's mouth. It bites, tosses head back, and disappears beneath the water again.

2:49 PM Harbor seal surfaces slightly upstream of last sighting. Not clear if it is the same animal.

3:48 PM Harbor seal surfaced directly in front of spotting location, submerged.

5:35 PM End Survey
